Saito’s Japanese Steakhouse

A new hibachi restaurant opened in Boca Raton.  On Glades Rd, near Lyons road where Ichiban used to be (and if I recall, Rudy’s before that).  I liked Ichiban (and I LOVED Rudy’s as a kid).  Saito’s dissapoints however.    The salad was overdressed with a thick goopy sauce that laid on top of lettuce and… nothing!  Not a cucumber, carrot, olive.  Just lettuce.  The soup should be described as broth, as there was nothing in it besides 2 thin slices of mushroom.

The menu was standard hibachi and japanese fare.  I ordered the steak and squid combo.  It came to the grill with vegetables all pre-chopped and tossed together.  Isn’t the point of this place the knife work done on the grill in front of you?  There was no show.  The chef just came out and cooked.  He did make a big deal of pouring the salt and pepper.  No jokes, wisecracks, knife work, not even a smile.   And the dinner did not include hibachi rice, that was $3 extra.  The chef said he was formerly of Benihana.  Benihana at one time knew how to make a show of this cuisine.  Sadly, there is nothing special and no reason to come back.

The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co.

They say “It’s all about the water.”  And they might be right.   I mean, there has to be a reason why bagels in South Florida are just SO BAD.  I have been so dissapointed with the Brooklyn Water Bagelsquality of bagels down here that I wanted to start a blog like www.worstpizza.com, except who has the time?  So I have come to accept mediocre bagels, at best, in Boca Raton, FL.  I don’t know if it is the water, the process, the ovens, the ingredients, but a real bagel needs to be crunchy and chewy at the same time.  And I have NEVER had a bagel down here that comes close to New York.  So naturally i was very skeptical when I heard about the newest bagel shop  The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. in Delray Beach, FL.

I went this morning and was the 206th customer.  I knew that the first 100 customers got something free, but I also knew there was no way I was getting there early enough to have a chance.  The restaurant was nice, brightly lit and smelled delicious.  The line to order overlooked the prep area where the bagels were being prepared.  I was a little dissapointed to see a machine rolling the bagels, I have always preferred a nice hand rolled bagel, but didn’t think much of it.  All orders are placed at the counter, but there are plenty of tables to sit down and eat.   I ordered a poppy bagel w/ cream cheese and was excited to try it.  I ran into a friend on line so waited and we dug in together.  My first impression was that the bagel was perfectly round, so I was not expecting much.  But then I remembered these are machine rolled, so that explains the shape.  I bit in and the bagel was delicious!  Wow, definitely the best bagel I have had in South Florida.  I wanted to get another, but there wasn’t a line for seconds.  And the line was too long to wait.  Since there is no table service, I realized that if you want to have lunch or a full meal there, you better order everything you need to first time around.  Anyway, the bagel was good, it gets 2 Big Bites, and I look forward to going back this Friday with more friends.

Where Kids Eat Free in Boca Raton, Florida

Living in Boca Raton, Florida with 2 young children I have always valued a restaurant where kids eat free.  I think the reason is obvious.  I sit at Duffy’s on Tuesday when kids eat free on Wednesday and feel like a schmuck.  I am paying more, and the restaurant obviously wants me to bring my kids tomorrow.  They may even have a balloon artist like Karl Koppertop or a clown.  So for all of you frequent Duffers out there, bring the little ones on Wednesdays.  The following is a list of restaurants and when kids eat free:

Baja Fresh, in the Boca Garden Shoppes on Palmetto Rd and Powerline, EVERYDAY M-F

Brewzzi in the Boca Glades Shopping Center, Mondays and Tuesdays Kids 12 and under eat free at. Up to two free kids menu meals with an adult food purchase of $12 or more.

Moe’s Southwest Grill kids eat free Mondays.

Boca Ale House, Denny’s, and Stir Crazy (in the Boca Town Center), as well as Beef O’Bradys (in the Riverstone Shoppes on 441) & Gator’s Dockside & Tony Roma’s (multiple South Florida locations, but not Boca) all allow kids to eat free on Tuesdays.

NEW TO www.abiteofboca.com CHAMPPPS AMERICAN in Ft. Lauderdale now offers kids eat free on Tuesdays.

Duffy’s, Lucille’s Bad to the Bone BBQ (in the Regency Court at Woodfield) and the Rain Forest Cafe (Sawgrass)  are the place to be, when kids eat free on Wednesdays.

Thursdays have less choice.  Stir Crazy (in the Boca Town Center) allows kids to eat free, so you may want to go somewhere else on Tuesday and save this one for Thursday.

Friday’s will yield even less choice, and the only thing I can come up with is Baja Fresh (as I mentioned before kids eat free M-F).  In the alternative the International House of Pancakes also allows kids to eat free, M-F.

As far as the weekends, your on your own.  The Draft House on Powerline south of Palmetto advertises kids eat free everyday, but I have not been there yet to check it out.

The Thirsty Turtle Sea Grill  recently opened on Yamato Rd off 441.  The original allowed kids to eat free onWednesdays but as of today, this one does not conform.  I will keep you posted.

JB’s on the Beach offers a kids menu, and though there is no kids eat free, the price is fair and nothing beats the view.

I will be checking out Bru’s Room shortly.  I have to find out if they have a consistent policy in all locations.

Please comment with your recommendations!

THIS JUST IN: SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS AT STEAK & SHAKE 1 KID EATS FREE WITH EVERY $8 ADULT PURCHASE

Lefty’s Tavern & Grille, Coral Springs, Florida

I am busy researching a comprehensive guide to where kids can eat free in Boca Raton, FL. In the meantime we were in Coral Springs and have heard good things about Lefty’s Tavern & Grille. We had no problems there although my kids didn’t eat free because we ordered sandwiches and burgers but needed to order one of the few entrees on the menu to “qualify” for the deal.  And we weren’t in the mood for entrees in this casual restaurant.  But a bigger gripe is that with the kids meal came a soft drink.  Milk or juice was extra.  And I do not believe that a 4 year old should be given a choice of Coke or Sprite.  Further, there was no healthier option than a side of french fries.  No substitutions!  While I can not recommend this place as a good play for “kids eat free” we did enjoy the balloon guy (although no one can compare with my friend Karl Koppertop. It’s a great spot halfway between boca and bank atlantic – right off the sawgrass at exit 14. Lefty’s Tavern & Grille, 5771 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs, Florida, (954) 752-3525.

Uncle Julio’s, Mizner Park, Boca Raton, Florida

Herschel's PlatterA new Mexican restaurant opened up in Boca Raton, and since my wife and I love Mexican food we wanted to try it.  This is upscale Mexican, as you can assume by its Mizner Park location, but it is accessible, not too high brow.   It is a beautifully built out space and I recommend sitting inside to enjoy it.  I personally don’t like seating outside, unless there is a view to warrant it.  We were very impressed by the fresh tortilla mahine, and the complimentary chips were delicious, although the salsa a bit too spicy.  We started with the Queso Flameado con Chorizo because it is a favorite of mine, and it was Tuesday.  Yes, this is only available on Tuesday.  It was delicious, although I usually like tortillas with this dish, and when I got some, it didn’t quite  go together the way I had imagined.  I ordered the Herschel’s Platter as my main.    While not a fan of tamales, these were good (but cold).  The chicken enchilada also could have been better if warmer.  The taco was fabulous though.  Overall, this dish is ENTIRELY too much food.  My wife enjoyed her pollo, but it had to be sent back as it was a little “pink.”  They just opened, so I forgive some minor complaints.  I would definitely go back, and this is a welcome addition to both Mizner and Boca.  I recommend taking a big bite.

Ben’s Kosher Restaurant, Delicatessen & Caterers of Boca Raton

bens

With my inaugural review of Pastrami Queen of Boca Raton behind me, I have given much thought about the responses I have received.  I liked Pastrami Queen but was critical about 2 things; the decor and the tie to the New York location.  I mean the NY and Boca locations have seperate websites, different menus and different logos.  While having a hot dog at Ben’s in Boca Raton I realised why I had noticed these things.  The decor of Ben’s is colorful, cheerful, playful and whimsical.  It is nicely decorated, with fun framed prints.  And it is clearly a South Florida outpost of the original.  The locations are all listed clearly on the menu and website.  The menu is the same as the NY location.  I am not saying that Ben’s is better than Pastrami Queen; just that is it decorated nicer and is clearly linked to its New York location.  I shall go back to pastrami Queen, as I believe the people who tell me it’s wonderful.  But unitl then, Ben’s gets a big bite of approval.

Pastrami Queen, Boca Raton, Florida

Pastrami QueenA new deli opened up in Boca Raton.  It’s called Pastrami Queen New York’s Famous Deli.  I had to blog about it because my friend the Professor bought me lunch for my birthday and I knew he would want me to.   I am familiar with the original Pastrami King in Queens, NY and the subsequent Pastrami Queen in New York, NY.  To me, this Florida outpost doesn’t remind me of either place.  It doesn’t have the same look or feel.  I know it is relatively knew, but it doesn’t seem decorated.  The walls are pretty bare.  Also, the menu’s of the NY Pastrami Queen and the Boca Pastrami Queen do not appear to be the same.   So whether it is connected to the one in New York or not, I am not sure.  The food was OK.  I had a Rachel, a Pastrami Reuben.  (Had to go for the Pastrami, after the name of the place).  And the Pastrami was good.  But I shouldn’t have gotten the Rachel.  Not enough meat on it. Also, they didn’t put Russian dressing on it.  It came on the side.  The menu said it came with a choice of several sides, but they didn’t have macaroni salad “for a few weeks.”  So I got the fries, which meant I couldn’t order a knish.  The Professor wanted me to mention that when I tried to put ketchup on the fries, the lid fell off.  I wouldn’t normally mention this, but it was funny.   Overall Pastrami Queen was pretty good.  I am not sure I would go out of my way to get there though, as readers of some more established Boca food blogs claim to do, but it was good.  I think they should decorate the walls a little more though.  And I did appreciate the small discount on my student card, so thanks for that.  I say Pastrami Queen is worth a Big Bite!
